Regenerating Lantau Mountain Camp: Co-creative architectural restoration
and nature conservation through participatory initiatives

Overview
Nestled between Sunset Peak and Yi Tung Shan, Lantau Mountain Camp is a
century-old summer retreat that preserves the spiritual legacy of early
20th-century missionaries. As one of Hong Kong's last remaining dark sky
sanctuaries, this heritage site offers unparalleled stargazing opportunities,
where historic stone cabins stand silhouetted against the Milky Way.
This training program is an educational activity of the " Regenerating Lantau Mountain Camp: Co-creative architectural restoration
and nature conservation through participatory initiatives" which is an
approved project under the Lantau Conservation Fund. It is collaboratively organized by the School
of Architecture at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Galaxy Scientific
Group. Through this night-sky observation, this activity aims to guide participants in
experiencing Lantau's serene natural beauty under the starry night sky, while
exploring the intriguing history of Lantau Mountain Camp. Designed to raise
awareness for nature conservation, the event offers hands-on astronomical
observation, allowing attendees to discover the wonders of the cosmos in Hong
Kong's pristine wilderness.
Objectives
•Respect and raise public awareness towards the protection of historical
structures of the Camp and nature conservation of Lantau.
•Learn about the restoration of Caretaker's Hut and
research efforts related to the project.
•Learn about star-gazing opportunities at the Camp
and Sunset Peak area
•Understanding astronomic science and appreciation,
and its relationship with natural landscape.
Content
• Guided introduction to Lantau Mountain Camp 's history,
restoration and conservation of the Caretaker's Hut.
• Fundamentals of astronomy
• Assembly and operation of 70mm refractor telescopes
• Celestial Exploration
Arrangements
• Date: 26 July 2025(Saturday)
• Time: 1:00pm - 9:30pm
• Venue: Lantau Mountain Camp and
area near Nam Shan Campsite, Sunset Peak
• Quota: 6 persons per session (first-come-first-served)
• Fee: Free (HKD100 refundable deposit required upon registration)

Itinerary and Route
• Meeting Point: Pak Kung Au. Attendees will board the
New Lantau Bus Route 3M from Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus.
• Ascent Route: Follow Lantau Trail Section 2
uphill, enjoy the natural scenery of Lantau Island, and arrive at Lantau
Mountain Camp.
• Descent Route: Return via the trail from Lantau
Mountain Camp to Nan Shan Campsite for a 2-hour night-sky observation session.
• Route Details: The overall distance is
approximately 6 kilometers, with an anticipated duration of 5 to 6 hours.
• Difficulty Level: According to the guidelines of
the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), the Lantau Trail
Section 2 involved in this activity has a composite difficulty rating of 4
stars. Participants are therefore required to possess prior hiking experience
and a good level of physical fitness to manage prolonged uphill trekking.
Important Notes
•Participants are advised to eat a proper meal
before the hike to maintain energy levels.
•Participants are required to bring their light
dinner.
•Please maintain quietness and avoid making noise
to respect the daily lives and privacy of residents.
•Keep the environment clean. Do not litter and
minimize disturbance to the surroundings.
•Always follow the instructions of the tour guide.
Do not leave the group or enter restricted areas to ensure the smooth running
of the event.
•Pay attention to personal and others' safety. Wear
appropriate outdoor clothing and anti-slip hiking shoes and bring sufficient
water.
•Protect the natural environment. Do not pick or
damage plants. Avoid contact with or feeding wildlife.
