2026‑03 Tai Mei Tuk Total Lunar Eclipse Observation Night

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align in a straight line. The Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the Moon, and the Moon enters the Earth’s umbra completely. Due to atmospheric refraction, some light still reaches the lunar surface, causing the Moon to appear dark red during totality.

On the night of March 3, 2026, Hong Kong will witness a rare total lunar eclipse. During this event, participants will observe the eclipse using the newly constructed large telescope at the Galaxy Scientific Group Tai Mei Tuk Observatory. If weather permits, Hong Kong’s largest 32‑inch telescope will also be deployed for visual observation (Note).

2026 Tai Mei Tuk Total Lunar Eclipse Observation Night

Galaxy Scientific Group will host a lunar eclipse observation event on March 3, 2026 (Tuesday evening). The programme includes a lunar eclipse science talk, observation through the large telescope at the Tai Mei Tuk Observatory, and a demonstration of astrophotography using smart telescopes. Several small telescopes will also be available for hands‑on operation. If weather conditions are favourable, Hong Kong’s largest 32‑inch telescope will be deployed for visual observation (Note). Participants may bring their own photography equipment.
